Hands that made Chicken ‘n Dumplins

Yesterday before sharing in the Lord’s Supper at our church, our pastor shared a story that really tugged on my heart!  Pastor Gregg was remembering his mother in-law who was well known for her homemade bread!   In fact when he and Kelly would go to visit on weekends, he made sure they didn’t leave until the hot homemade bread was done and ready to eat complete with a big slab of melted butter —–mmmmmm!!!  But his eyes teared up and he said, “You know what I miss more than that homemade bread?  The hands that lovingly made it, the hands that served it!”  That struck home with me…

Just the day before, I came across this recipe of my grandmother’s famous chicken ‘n dumplings.  Seeing that recipe made me smile, remembering our sweet Memi.  She was such a great cook, but it was her homemade “chicken ‘n dumplins,” as the kids called it, that was a much requested dish (notice the note in the recipe ~ “A family favorite!”).  To this day my aunts can come pretty close to making Memi’s dumplings and I make attempts, but it’s just not quite the same!  The taste is still so good, but it hit me yesterday what the difference is —– we miss the hands that made the flour and egg mixture, rolled out the flour, cut the dumplings and dropped them into the chicken broth mixture.  And then when done,  those hands dished everyone out a big heaping bowl and served us with her sweet smile and loving words of, “Here ya go, hon!”

Yes, we miss those sweet hands!  Not  for the chicken ‘n dumplins, but more importantly for the so many, many times through the years she folded those hands in prayer for each of us.

About beegee10

I am a follower of Jesus on the journey of discovering His real, lasting joy through God's grace and thanksgiving. Several years ago, I married my best friend, whom I met in kindergarten many years ago. Life choices took each of us on separate paths, but Divine Appointment brought our paths back together. It's exciting to share this journey with my sweet man - a man who loves God more than he loves me! What a gift!! As a young woman I prayed for God to send a godly man like my daddy to pursue me. I just wasn't listening and abiding when I should have been. Good news in HIS time and in HIS grace, HE did! Not only does my sweet man love me, but he loves my three grown kids as if they were his own. He shares their joys and he hurts when they hurt. I love to hear him pray for each of them daily as we begin and end our days. View all posts by beegee10
