As I’m going through the study of Galatians 5: 16 -25, the word fruit caught the “word person” in me. I would say through much of my life I’ve always said the “fruits of the Spirit.” As I started thinking about the difference between the collective noun fruit and the plural noun fruits (sorry, it’s just that English teacher in me!), it hit me with a big AHA! Paul said, “But the fruit of the Spirit” —— collective, not plural! And then it really became even more clear, when this past Sunday during our Bible study, Mike, our leader, brought out this beautifully wrapped gift box to show the gift we have been given by the Holy Spirit. Of course, the gift inside the box was fruit —– fruit of all kinds! But it was one big gift! So when now when I hear the fruit of the Spirit, I no longer am going to see them as individual little gifts —– instead, I see
ALL given to me because Paul goes on to say, “And those who are Christ’s have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit.”
This summer I shared in fun study of Kelly Minter’s book, The Fitting Room where she talks about dressing ourselves each day with the virtues of the fruit of the Spirit. I know I can spend an unthinkable amount of time each day in my closet just thinking about what to wear. So not only do I need to dress for the day or for the occasion, but more importantly I need to open my gift I have been so freely given, and dress with the character of the fruit of the Spirit.
What are you wearing today? Let’s take a look at our closet . . .
