ran across this prayer today in my reading Prayers for the Prodigal and loved how this picture and scripture came back to my mind. i want to share this prayer “blessed without knowing it” —- so timely in my prayer time and i believe in the life of our prodigal son.
When Jacob awoke from his sleep, he thought, “Surely the Lord is in this place, and I was not aware of it.”
~ Genesis 28:16
You never cease to surprise me, Lord.
There have been many times when you were at work in [our] son’s life and I didn’t know it.
I’d like to thank you for those times, Father, especially for the ones that are happening right now that I’m [and he] unaware of.
You told Nicodemus, “The wind blows wherever it pleases. You hear its sound, but you cannot tell where it comes from or where it is going. So it is with everyone born of the Spirit.“
You are at work in ways that I may not see for years. Nothing escapes You — You have heard my prayers [and the prayers of countless others] for our son and are lovingly responding.
Your faithfulness makes me want to pray all the more.
I praise You that You never stop working, Lord.
“You will not grow tired or weary,” and “no one can fathom” your understanding.
It helps to remember that when I’m worn out [ or discouraged, or growing faint-hearted]!
Our son can run from You only so long, because “even youths grow tired and weary, and young men stumble and fall.”
Catch him, Lord! Be there when he falls to his knees and calls out to You [as he has done before].
I thank You that You will be there to lift him up and hold him there close just like I used to do when he fell as a boy.
“Speak tenderly” to him that his sin “has been paid” and lead him home to You.
You have ways to reach him that I have not thought of, Father.
You do “great things beyond our understanding” – how many blessing have I not thought of?
How wonderful You are! “How great is your goodness, which You have stored up or those who fear You.
Just like Jacob, who realized that your presence surrounded him, I pray [daily] you will awaken my son to the beauty of Your presence.
Let him hear You say, “I am with you and will watch over you wherever you go” [these words are etched on his heart, Lord. help him remember that You do go with him wherever, anywhere, everywhere he goes].
As You did with me, bring him to the understanding that Your blessing reaches further than he could ever imagine, and let him praise you for it. Amen.
